The Centre for Applied Ethics and Political Communication in Africa (CAEPOCOM AFRICA), has called for the development of political communication skills in Nigerian politics to engender an informed citizenry and responsive governance.
The Project Coordinator of the group, Mrs Geraldine Ezeobi made the call in Ibadan on yesterday after a Review Meeting assessing Nigeria’s 2019 elections.
The report of the group indicates that the nation, from various political campaigns, saw interplay of citizen journalism and traditional media which reflected citizens’ political commitment.
It, however, decried certain roles played by the social media, resulting in heated polity and poor political communication skills among politicians in the country.
“The team agreed on the need for political communication education for political actors and the citizenry, while media practitioners must also strive to avoid being manipulative and speculative in their reportage.
“CAEPOCOM AFRICA stressed the importance of applying ethics in political persuasion and all forms of communication as this will contribute to the creation of an informed citizenry and responsive governance,” the report noted.
