RSG Sends Nine Coaches To Spain For Academy
Nine coaches selected from across Nigeria are set to undergo further training in Spain preparatory to the commencement of the Rivers/Real Madrid football academy in Port Harcourt.
The coaches who would be under the auspices of t he state, according to Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye, who briefed newsmen in his office on Monday, were chosen after a rigorous interview process without sentiment or political colouration.
On return from the training, expected to be at the Real Madrid Football Club facilities in Spain, the coaches would form the pioneer technical hands to kick off the nascent Real Madrid Academy in Port Harcourt.
“The Rivers State Government is excited that the Real Madrid Football Academy Project in Port Harcourt has reached more than 75 percent completion”, said the sports commissioner, adding of next month.
He further said that the academy is designed on one of the platforms to give Rivers State youngsters as well as residents and other Nigerians an opportunity to explore their talent while not missing out on formal education.
The academy, when operational, said Iyaye, would not focus on money or profit making but accommodating children who ordinarily would have missed being exposed to such facilities.
While bidding the coaches farewell before their departure, Hon Iyaye advised them to be good ambassadors of the state and country and warned them against indiscipline.
Among those making the trip are Joseph Egbu, Odinga, Gabriel Nwiyara, Isaac Atonbere and Martins Datoru. Others include Sunny Iseokweima, Albert Chinwo, Victor Babayaro and Eldered Sunju-Abbey, who is the project coordinator.
