PH Comedian Advises Entertainers To Shun Politics
Popular Port Harcourt-based comedian, St. Aboki has advised entertainers to refrain from openly supporting any political party in order to be carried along by all concerned.
Aboki gave the advice during an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
The easy going comedian explained that the danger in identifying with parties and, or a particular candidate is that they may not enjoy patronage by the party that feels left out.
Aboki who said he has spent about seven years in the comedy industry mentioned that music star, Duncan Mighty is non-partisan and is often invited to perform by all politicians in Rivers State.
He said, “To me everyone should not be involved in politics. For instance, if you are a comedian and you belong to a particular party, it will be very difficult to enjoy patronage from another party.
“If a party has an event now, you may not be invited because the organisers feel that you do not support the party. This affects entertainers. So it is better to be neutral,” St. Aboki said.
When asked how the comedy business is faring, Aboki said one of the major challenges facing the industry is cliques, saying, “They believe that if you do not belong to a group or gang, you may not get a platform in the industry. If you do not belong anywhere especially the big boys gang/group it will be difficult for you to rise quickly. “
St. Aboki however commended those he termed big boys in the industry for organizing frequent comedy shows like ‘AY-Live’, ‘Comedy Got Talents’ and taking it to different states in the country which gives opportunity for up and coming comedians to sell themselves and showcase their talents.
