The Coordinator of the 2019 General Elections Local Observer Groups in Enugu State, Mr Samuel Onoja has debunked allegations that an election observer was killed in the state.
Onoja made the disclosure yesterday in Enugu while briefing newsmen at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Collation Centre.
He said that the clarification had become necessary following widespread information that one of their colleagues was killed during the governorship and state assembly elections in the state.
It would be recalled that an All Progressives Congress (APC) supporter in Igboeze North State Constituency was killed during the polls.
The Enugu State Police Command in had since confirmed the incident, adding that investigations had been opened to ascertain the cause of the incident.
Meanwhile, Onoja, who is a member of Global Development Centre on Rescue Mission in Nigeria, said that none of the election observers that served in the state had any issue.
“I have contacted the leaders of the 15 Non-Governmental Organisations that served in the state and none of them reported any incidence involving any of their members.
“The deceased is not an observer and the circumstance surrounding what happened is not something we can go into,” he said.
Onoja said that it was unfortunate that some sections of the media fed the public with falsehood which was capable of heightening tension in the country.
“The elections were successful and results are coming in. Security men did their job very well,” he said.
Onoja commended INEC for conducting a peaceful and credible poll in the state.
