The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has settled not fewer than 169 civil matters under the alternative resolution and conciliation department in Rivers State.
Spokesman of the NSCDC in Rivers State, Mr Oguntuase, in a chat with The Tide said the alternative resolution and conciliation was one of the newest departments established to reduce conflicts and other criminal challenges in the country.
He explained that “We settle matters that include herdsmen and farmers, indebtedness, familial issues and land cases. The aim is to create a win-win situation because nobody goes to the court and come back the same”.
Oguntuase said though conciliation was not gotten under duress, many of those who brought their matter before the agency do so due to the civil atmosphere and peaceful nature it’s being done.
According to him, though there are still many unresolved cases, the corps is devising means to ensure they were amicably settled.
On what the NSCDC was doing to tackle oil theft and bunkering, the Rivers State Civil Defence Spokesman said, the malaise had been reduced to its barest minimum over the years.
“We have our intelligence all over the state, the surveillance we have in place is such that there is no part of the state that we don’t have our men on alert”, he said.
To further curb illegal refining of petroleum products, he revealed that the Corps had devised a stop and search tactics and most products seized were subjected to laboratory analysis.
In addition to checking bunkering he said, last year the body also helped in rescuing people trapped in the seven-storey building that collapsed in new GRA, Port Harcourt.
He explained that intervening in emergencies is one of the mandate and duties of the NSCDC, as he called on members of the public to alert the agency of any incident in their areas.
