Sequel to the rising spate of killings, kidnappings and other forms of violence across the nation in recent times, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Barrister Sunday Ndudi has stressed the need for the government to rise up to its responsibility of ensuring that culprits are nabbed and made to face the wrath of the law.
Ndudi stated this during a chat with Tide Tide on the sideline of the arrest of four suspected aassasions by men of the police at the Oyigbo area, Monday.
Ndidu who noted that one of the cardinal functions of the government was the protection of lives and properties of its citizens said the government was slacking in this area thereby giving rise to increasing societal vices and criminal activities.
He regretted that godfatherism had taken over the law, noting that these criminals hide under the gloves of their godfathers and go scot-free.
According to him, the impunity syndrome has only worsened the already bad state of the country as far as crime and lawlessness is concerned maintaining that should the situation continue, the country would remain stagnant in terms of development.
“Our Nigerian society has become so lawless hat people do every and anything they like and the law does not bind them.
Godfatherism and government of impunity is the order of the day. But then, we cannot continue like this. We call on the government to rise up to the challenge by ensuring that drastic lawful measures be taken against these culprits irrespective of who they are. This will certainly checkmate the situation and the society will become crime-free at least to a reasonable extent”, lawyer said.
