The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State says it has not suspended the on going nationwide strike embarked upon by the union as there was total compliance in the university by members of the union
The chairman of ASUU at IAUOE, Dr. Ugochuku Agi stated this while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt over the weekend, adding that the strike was comprehensive as it includes all branches of the union across the states.
“lecturers of the institution are observing the indefinite nationwide strike called by the leadership of the union.”
This is coming barely a week after the university authority announced the resumption of lectures in the institution with effect from Monday, 28th January, 2019. The university through the Registrar, Mrs Hope Kue-Ikoro had last week in a memo addressed to all the Deans, HODs and lecturers among other things disclosed that the on-going registration exercise for all students would end on Monday, February 15, 2019 and urged all staff and students to adhere strictly to the revised academic calendar for the first semester 2018/2019 session.
Dr. Ugochuku however, opined that the strike was not against the state government but in total compliance with the directive of the ASUU National leadership and advised members to continue with the strike, pending further directives from the National leadership of the union.
When contacted on phone over the recent development, he Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Ms Ngozi Okiridu said lectures had commenced in the university as directed by the management, adding that majority of the lecturers have backed out of the ASUU strike and resumed their lecturer’s accordingly.
