Diete-Spiff Tasks Politicians On Peaceful Polls
First military administrator of old Rivers State, King Alfred Diete-Spiff has advised politicians in Rivers State to eschew all forms of violence and embrace peace as they go into the forth-coming general elections.
Spiff who stated this during a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt, weekend, also advised politicians to play by the rules of the game.
He said, “Politics is a game and even people of the same family can belong to different political parties. They do not have to be in the same party. So, I will encourage that people should follow the parties of their own choice and be free to express their rights to vote.
“Frankly, what we want is sustainable development in the state. The state has done quite well ahead of quite a number of states. But there is still room for improvement,” Spiff stated.
In another development, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on youths in Rivers State to resist the temptation of vote buying during the elections.
Rivers State Director, NOA, Ayo Tamuno, while speaking with newsmen at the South-South stakeholders’ dialogue on peaceful and violence free elections, said incompetent and corrupt politicians are those promoting vote buying.
Tamuno said, “Two wrongs cannot make a right. If they buy your votes, you should also denominate it with the implications of buying your vote.
“For example, somebody who buys your vote for five thousand Naira. What does it come to for 365 days times four years, calculate it. It means that you are virtually worth nothing.
“Following that calculation it is less than three Naira. So what are you worth? Is that what one should be doing? It is very wrong and we cannot use the fact that people are hungry to justify it,” the State NOA boss stated.
