Police Confirm Hijack Of 18-Seater Bus In Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the hijack of an 18-seater bus with its passengers at Rumuekpe axis of East-West Road in Emohua Local Government Area of the state by unknown gunmen.
According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the driver of the vehicle was allegedly shot dead during the encounter.
The eyewitness account has it that the incident occurred by 8.am on Monday at Rumuekpe junction.
He said that the bus belonged to one of the inter-city transport companies operating in the state enroute to Bayelsa State from Port Harcourt.
The eyewitness said the driver was killed when he attempted to bypass the illegal road block mounted by the hijackers, while all the passengers were taken away to unknown destination.
When contacted, the spokesman of the state police command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni said the command had received the sad news and added that the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Usman Belel had directed the tactical unit of the command to go out and ensure that all passengers are rescued unhurt.
Omoni, however trial disclosed that three out of the 18 passengers had been rescued and explained that efforts were ongoing to rescue all the victims and arrest the perpetrators.
