Philanthropist Flays Fans’ Invasion Of Pitch
A football philanthropist in Port Harcourt, Ernest Elechukwu has described the invasion of the pitch by team supporters as barbaric in a football competition of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFC) match.
He called on club owners to educate their supporters on how to behave during football matches.
Elechukwu stated this during a Radio Programme monitored by Tidesports yesterday in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the League Management Company (LMC) should punish the club whenever the fans or supporters invaded the pitch or attacked match officials during football competition.
He explained that it is very unfortunate that fans are notorious when it comes to improper behaviour by attacking officials on the pitch during and after matches.
“Such supporters think that there are doing the team a favour rather they do not know that they are causing problems to the club owners.” Elechukwu said.
It was the match day three fixtures of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). The match between Remo Stars C of Lagos and Insurance of Benin, the fans of Remo Stars invaded the pitch and attacked match officials after the match that ended in draw.
After the deliberations of reports and evidence from the attack on officials by supporters of Remo Stars FC, the LMC has fined the club the total sum of N6m including compensation to the Referees and for the club to produce the two identified supporters involved in the attack and they will play their next three home matches away at Osun State.
Furthermore, the chairman of the club, Hon. Kunle Soname was banned from further participation in the next three matches and fixed the sum of N500,000 for granting a media interview in which he made comments that brought the league to disrepute, the report also states that he is charged for misconduct and utterances that did not show positive example to players and supports.
