Residents of Port Harcourt and of environs have called on the authorities of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) to step up its activities against indiscriminate dumping or refuse in Port Harcourt metropolis and its environs.
A cross section of residents who spoke in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt stressed the need for the Agency to ensure that anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately is arrested and prosecuted.
They also called on the Agency to ensure regular cleaning of drainages and gutters, and also to ensure that the city does not experience flooding this year.
They also commended Governor Wike’s untiring effort in ensuring that Port Harcourt takes its status as Garden City of Nigeria. Speaking in an interview with The Tide, one of the respondents, Sir Cyrus Ekonu decried the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the city, adding that the Agency must ensure that those perpetrating this act are brought to book.
Also speaking, Mr. David Lazarus urged the Agency to ensure that refuse contractors are fully mobilised to the various duping sites to ensure the collection and evacuation of refuse in the city. He also urged the Agency to ensure refuse collection bins are stationed at strategic positions across the city, while residents should be sensitized to ensure effective use of the refuse bins.
