A Taekwondo Olympian, Emmanuel Oghenejobo has urged the national athletes to be familiar with the electronic devices guiding the game so as to excel in the forthcoming Nigeria International Open, billed for Abuja.
Oghenejobo told News Men in Lagos, yesterday that the acquaintance was necessary because the electronic devices contained all the rules guiding the game.
According to him, an athlete can drop points if he or she fails to understand the rules of the game.
“This is why all the athletes must be familiar with the way the device works, to improve their ranking.
“The reason is because any World Taekwondo approved competition requires the use of electronic devices, so the acquaintance is necessary to guide our athletes,” he said.
Tidesports source reports that the event will begin in Abuja from Feb. 8 to Feb. 10.
He commended the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation for hosting the competition, adding that it would improve the standard of the sport, expose the athletes and create higher ranking opportunities for them.
The 1992 Bacecelona Olympian urged the athletes to put in their best and take advantage of the event to enhance their preparations for All African Games (AAG) coming up later in the year.
The 12th African Games will take place from 23 Aug. to 3 Sept.2019 in Casablanca.
“The forthcoming international Open is a good development for us and as host country; our athletes must strive to top the medals table because it will increase their WT ranking chances.
“This tournament will form part of build up for 2019 AAG and qualifiers for 2020 Olympics, so our athletes must make the best use of the opportunity to stand a better chance.”
Oghenejobo also urged athletes that were yet to register for the competition to do so quickly, stressing that registration would end on Jan. 20.
