The long awaited dry season (Harmattan) is here again. While some folks love the feeling and the weather, others repulse the atmosphere altogether.
The truth is that no matter how we feel about the harmattan weather, it’s real and has come to stay, and the best we can do is to manage or adapt to the situation.
That said, the harmattan season is usually dry, sandy, dusty and hazy, of course these lead to range of ailments such as cough, sore eyes, cracked lips, dry skin, body hotness, runny nose and feeling of dizziness.
The physiological make up of each individual determines the kind of reaction one would have. As stated earlier, many people can easily adapt to the weather, while others do not. I know of many people who complain of the hotness of the season. So the question is: How do you manage the situation?
The first natural path to adapt is to know how the weather affects you personally. Do you sneeze all the time? Do you usually develop a cranky cough, or do your eyes itch you?
Dusts from the harmattan are a conveyor belt of many ailments, especially cough and sore throat. And that is why it’s advised that you have some cough tincture by your side.
A cough tincture can be made with blending some raw garlic and ginger into small bottle of honey, allow to stay overnight before drinking. Take a spoon morning and evening depending on the seriousness of the cough.
The cracking of lips and skin is caused by the dry weather. Remember that during harmattan, the air is dry and so it affects moist either on our bodies or lips. It’s no wonder to see ladies with heavy lips sticks this period.
One can curb dry lips by making natural wet lips with common ingredients sourced around, such as Vaseline, glycerin or olive oil. Robbing or putting on a heavy oily stuff on the lips can make it much softer and less painful.
The challenge of having a dry skin this period can be solved by applying oily lotions on the body. Though some people are averse to using Vaseline on the skin, one can prepare an oily lotion by mixing glycerin or olive oil with any body cream of use.
Finally, keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water this season. Feeling of thirst can lead to dizziness and sore throat. By drinking enough fluids, the body system is kept at is optimum and cool.
