Monarchs Charge New CP On Peaceful Polls
Traditional rulers in Rivers State have called on the police to increase security in order to improve the confidence of people living and doing business in the state before, during and after the forth-coming general elections.
The Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, King Dandison Douglas Jaja made the call when the new Commissioner of Police, Usman Balel paid him a familiarisation visit at his office in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Jaja, who is also the King of Opobo Kingdom in Rivers State urged the police to take the lead and ensure that the elections in the state were devoid of any form of violence.
He further urged him to assist the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the vote of the people counted so that the election umpire can pride himself as not being bias.
According to King Jaja, “We want to see an election that is free and fair. We want to see an election that is devoid of violence. We want to see an election that will give credit to the umpires that our votes must count.
“The Police is very much in the tick of this whole thing. The police is the first port of call of this election in terms of security. We are worried that from what is happening around we may have a repeat of what happened in 2015.
“But we pray that you will do everything to ensure that does not happen,” the Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers stated.
Earlier, the State Commissioner of Police, Usman Balel, said the familiarisation visit to the traditional rulers’ council was to seek partnership with the royal father and ensure that the state experienced improvement in security.
