Group Tasks FG On Rule Of Law
A Port Harcourt based non-governmental organisation, Advocacy for Peace,Good Governance and Social Justice, has said that the anti-corruption war must be fought within the ambit of the law.
The President of the group, Mr John Clement who, stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt on Monday, remarked that the rule of law must be respected in the nation’s efforts to make things better for the populace.
Mr Clement noted that the use of self-help would relegate Nigeria in the comity of nations.
The president, who spoke on the removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, noted that the CJN might have breached the rule of law but his removal ought to have followed the rule of law.
Mr Clement opined that the procedure adopted was not as prescribed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.
He pointed out that in a democratic country, there ought to be independence of the judiciary.
He noted that the judiciary could never by independent of the executive if the executive continued to interfere with its affairs.
Mr Clement told the Federal Government not to make Nigeria a laughing stock of civilised nations.
He remarked that the European Union, United Kingdom and United States had reacted over the suspension of the CJN.
