A Medical Officer at Central Hospital, Ughelli , Dr. Ovo Ogbinaka has advised females with cases of Chlamydia to seek early treatment to avoid complications.
Ogbinaka gave the advice in an interview with the newsmen in Benin City on Tuesday.
He said that complications could be avoided with the application of appropriate medical care, hygiene and regular checkups.
Ogbinaka described Chlamydia in females as as infection of the womb, adding that it was a common cause of infertility.
If a woman gets infected, the infection affects the cervix first (the cervix is the opening of the uterus).
“If the condition is not treated, the Chlamydia bacteria can spread to the fallopian tubes and ovaries.
“Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and it is easily spread because it often causes no symptoms1,’’ Ogbinaka said.
According to him, the disease can be unknowingly passed to sexual partners and about 75 per cent of infections in women and 50 per cent in men are without symptoms.
He said it was not easy to tell if a person was infected with Chlamydia since symptoms were not always apparent.
The physician, however, said symptoms like abnormal vaginal discharge with odor, bleeding between periods, or painful periods were indication that Chlamydia had become serious.
Other symptoms he said included abdominal pain with fever, pain when having sex, itching or burning in or around the vagina, and pain when urinating.
He said the major cause of Chlamydia was having sex with different partners which eventually affect the womb.
