CLO Condemns Planned CJN’s Arraignment
The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), has kicked against the planned arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen by the Federal Government, describing it as laughable and an embarrassment to the nation.
Chairman of CLO in Rivers State, Sotonye George who disclosed this to newsmen in Port Harcourt last Monday advised the apex government to immediately withdraw the charges against the CJN.
George expressed worry that the judiciary was neither respected nor protected and wondered what the hope of the common man might be if such an institution is being intimidated.
He said: “The order of the Federal Government asking the CJN to vacate his office is laughable and an embarrassing to the nation, especially the judiciary and the common man.
“It is unfortunate that the judiciary is no longer respected and regarded. They are not protected and they are also intimidated. Most times they are harassed for one reason or the order,” the State CLC chairman stated.
George called on the federal government to immediately rescind its decision and withdraw the charges against Justice Onnoghen in the interest of the nation.
“The way the judiciary is being treated is not how it should be. We (CLO) are asking the Federal Government to retrace its step for the benefit of the nation because such embarrassment will not only end up with the judiciary.
“It will cause a lot of catastrophe in the nation if such a situation goes on unchecked. Again what will be the hope of the common man if such a revered institution is intimidated in this manner,’’? George queried.
