A legal practitioner in Rivers State, Barr. Chris Itamunola has described the alleged false, assets declaration against Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen as an embarrassment to the nation’s Judiciary and democracy.
Itamunola condemned the allegation in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt last Monday.
He said the recent allegation against the Chief Justice of Nigeria was a ploy by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to truncate democracy in the country.
Itamunola, a former Special Adviser to Governor Nyesom Wike on Inter-Party Affairs said the alleged ploy was a calculated attempt to deny the people of South-South complete tenure of the Chief Justice position in the country.
He called on members of the National Assembly from South-South’s states to wake-up to the alleged injustice by APC’s government.
“The recent allegation against the Chief Justice of Nigeria to vacate his office is laughable and embarrassing to the nation, especially the judiciary and the common man.
“It is unfortunate that our judiciary no longer has its respect and regard. They are not protected, they are intimidated, most time, they are harassed for one reason or the other.
“But that is not how it should be. We are asking the Federal Government to retrace its steps for the benefit of the nation, because such embarrassment will not only end-up with the judiciary, it will cause a lot of catastrophe in the nation”, the legal practitioner said.
It would be recalled that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen was summoned to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal over the allegation of false, declaration of assets.
