The Rivers State Government has said that about eighteen thousand youths would be engaged when the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Train7 project is completed next year.
The State Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, Dr. Leloonu Nwububasa disclosed this in Port Harcourt, the state capital, weekend.
Nwububasa explained that in preparation for that project, special construction skill training and empowerment linkages are ongoing, adding that people are also being recruited.
He said, “LNG Train seven offers opportunity to employ as much as eighteen thousand workers into the new train seven that will start next year. Construction skill training and empowerment linkages in preparation for NLNG Train7 is ongoing. We are beginning to recruit people.
“Rivers State is already preparing for that opportunity. We are calling on all stakeholders to join us in this preparation and get our people ready,” the Commissioner said.
He further said that a strategic action plan to create one million jobs in Rivers State in the next five years is being worked out, saying, “It is realizable and we (the state government) will even surpass it.”
Dr. Nwububasa explained that the 2019 appropriation bill presented to the Rivers State House of Assembly by Governor Nyesom Wike last Monday shows that the state government is interested in giving jobs to the people.
“If you listen to the Governor’s budget speech, our recurrent expenditure was actually increased because the government wants to increase salaries based on the new minimum wage when it is increased.
“This administration is keen about getting Rivers people employed. The neighbourhood watch scoop over four thousand out of the system to bring them into jobs,” he said, pointing out that the present administration has been very responsible and responsive.
The Commissioner noted that the Governor Wike-led government came in at the time of recession and that the governor wanted Rivers people to stay in jobs which explains why he started massive road construction.
“The construction in Rivers State offered opportunities to people to work in various sites and in turn created a number of jobs for Rivers people. You are aware that as at September, the Nigeria Investment Promotion Council said that Rivers State overtook Lagos in foreign direct investment to the tune of several million dollars.
“That tells you this government has done quite a lot. Rivers State has created a portal called the rivjobs. That portal is going to be modernized to also have the employers on that site. So if you are a job seeker, you have to log on to www.rivjobs and you upload your qualification and we can also link you to jobs,” Dr. Nwububasa stated.
