Group Flays Invasion Of Neighbourhood Corps Training Camp
The Rivers State United Community Development Committee (UCDC) has condemned the invasion of the training camp of the Rivers State Neigbourhood and Safety Corps Agency by the Nigerian Army.
The Coordinator, UCDC, Rivers State, John .C. Onwubualili said the action of the army against the Neigbourhood and Safety Corps was selfish and against the rule of law.
Onwubualili noted that the issue of security is under the concurrent list, explaining that both the federal and state governments have the power to ensure adequate security at their levels.
Onwubualili said “section 4, subsection 7, of the 1999 Constitution stated that the State Assembly of a state can have the power to make laws for the peace, order and good governance’’.
He maintained that the procedure of the Rivers State Neigbourhood and Safety Corps was pure and legal saying “those opposing the establishment of the safety agency did not wish well for Rivers State. They are also the people who love to demarcate the state for their selfish reasons’’.
The State UCDC Coordinator said that the police lack the manpower to tackle insecurity in the state, adding that they are not meeting up with the demands of the society.
“The agency is not going to take over the work of the police but to compliment their efforts. The sky is too large for only two birds to fly. I expect the army to be grateful to the state government for creating this agency which will reduce their workload,’’ Onwubualili stated.
It would be recalled that the army last Thursday invaded the training camp of the Neigbourhood and Safety Corps at Nonwa-Gbam, Tai, Local Government Area of the state disrupting its activities.
