A Port Harcourt-based businessman, Mr Joseph Jacobs has decried the high rate of violence against women.
Mr Jacobs, who made the condemnation while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend, expressed regrets that the Nigerian society was not women-friendly.
He said women were frequently kidnapped and raped by miscreants and criminals who, ambushed commuters on the high ways across the state.
Mr Jacobs noted that kidnapping had become prevalent in the rural communities of Rivers State especially in Ikwerre and Emohua Local Government Areas of the state.
He stated that the violence against women had continued to rise in recent times because of the inability of security agencies to bring perpetrators to book.
He remarked that the issue of violence against women had also trickled down to the girl-child.
Mr Jacobs also expressed regrets that the violence against women had degraded to female children.
He said adult males had continued to violate female children irrespective of their ages.
The businessman explained that female children were molested and sexually assaulted every other day.
He blamed the rise in kidnapping on lack of jobs for young persons, who resorted to kidnapping in order to earn a living.
“Many young men loiter around the streets of urban centres without hope of making ends meets”, Mr Jacobs stated.
He called on all levels of government to take steps to check violence against women in the state.
