BFN President Hails Wike’s Support For Badminton
The President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) Francis Orbih, says the support given to BFN by the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, has given him reason to continue the development of Badminton in Nigeria.
He stated that a total of N7.2m have been won in the First edition of Governor Wike National Badminton Championship, saying that this has been the highest prize money won in the history of Badminton Championship, in Nigeria.
Orbih said this on Saturday, at closing ceremony of the First National Governor Wike National Badminton Championship, held at the Alfred Diete Spiff Sports Complex , Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
According to him, Nigeria is dominating Badminton once again in Africa, both in senior and junior categories, adding championship like this always give opportunities to many shareholders in the sport to become coaches and administrators to develop the sports.
“In male category our number one player Anu Opeyori who just won the Zambia International is ranked number two in Africa, while his double pair partner, Godwin Olufua ranked number one.
While in the female category Dorcas Adesokan, that won the Zambia and South Africa International Championship recently, is ranked number one in Africa” Orbih said.
The BFN president noted that with the facilities on ground the state can successfully host Africa, in the first quarter of next year.
Rivers State has earlier won the hosting right to host the Senior Africa Badminton Championship, scheduled to hold in April next year.
Orbih thank the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike for his support towards development of Badminton in the country and also commend the state Ministry of Sports for its support during the period.
