Group Tasks Security Agencies On Peace In Rivers
A Port Harcourt based non-governmental organisation, Advocacy for Peace, Good Governance and Social Justice, has condemned the recent killings in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State and charged security agencies to live up to their responsibilities.
The President of the group, Mr. John Clement, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend, expressed regrets about the spate of killings in recent times in the area.
He noted that the trend must be checked to forestall pre-election violence before it assumed a crisis dimension especially as the 2019 general election was drawing closer by the day.
Mr. Clement explained that the security agencies must work assiduously to track notorious criminals causing mayhem in the state in the guise of cultism.
He listed the killing of All Progressives Congress Publicity Secretary, Hon. Samuel Wanjoku and the attack on Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) at Ipo, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State and described the occurrences as ominous signal of the danger ahead of 2019 general elections.
Mr. Clement urged the people of Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State to give peace a chance.
According to him, the resurgence of killing in Ikwerre Local Government Area is worrisome especially as 2019 elections draw near. We must ensure that all hands are on deck to check the ugly trend. My organisation will continue to partner with individuals and well- meaning individuals to spread the gospel of peace.
He pointed out that no laudable development could be achieved in time of crisis.
Mr. Clement remarked that security agencies must tackle as a matter of urgency the problem of other crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping and cultism.
“It is the duty of law enforcement agencies to protect lives and properties. They cannot turn a blind eye and pretend not to see when cultists kill themselves. Nobody has a right to take the life of another except in obedience to the law”, he stated.
