The Assistant Inspector General of Police in-charge of Zone Six, Calabar, Cross River State, Adeyemi Samuel Ogunjemilusi has said that the police would not work for any preferred political party during the forthcoming 2019 general elections in the state.
He further urged people to discountenance speculations that some persons would use federal might to cow the police to work for them during the 2019 elections, adding that there was no need to accept such, as the police, he said, was for every citizen of the country.
Ogunjemilusi stated this during his maiden visit to the Rivers State Police Command in Port Harcourt, yesterday, as part of official familiarisation visit to acquaint himself with officers and men of commands under his jurisdiction.
He averred that the police administration under the command of IGP Ibrahim Idris, has been decentralised as every zone in the country was represented in the leadership of the force.
Ogunjemilusi assured that the 2019 general elections would be peaceful, credible, and devoid of violence, adding that the police would play the role of an impartial and neutral security agency during the elections across the country.
“Nobody should be threatened with federal might. The police will maintain law and order before, during and after the elections. Our duty is to protect all the electorate to exercise their franchise and civic responsibilities”, he added.
The AIG urged members of the society to build bridges with the police through timely information to enable the security personnel respond swiftly and timely to distress situations, and warned trouble makers to desist from such acts or be prepared to face the full weight of the law.
He used the opportunity to thank officers and men of the command as well as other stakeholders for their support to the police, and urged them to continue in that regard.
Earlier in his address of welcome, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed thanked the new AIG for the visit, and assured him of the continued support of officers and men of the command to enable him succeed.
Zaki stated that due to the economic position of the state, crime and other violent activities were predominately noticed, adding that the police command, through its tactical formations, has been able to curtail the excesses of such miscreants.
He, however, listed some challenges affecting the command such as lack of adequate manpower, accommodation, vehicles, and training, among others.
