Proceedings at the Rivers State House of Assembly commenced last week with a plenary on Wednesday. The screening of a commissioner- nominee and wife of the late State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Inime Aguma topped the agenda of the House.
The screening of Hon. Aguma was in fulfilment of the Governor’s declaration recently that he (Wike) would appoint the wife of Aguma into the state cabinet.
During her screening, the House urged the nominee to give a brief profile of hers and thereafter urged her to take a bow.
Leader of the House, Hon. Martin Amaewhule had introduced the nominee to the floor, pointing out that her experience over the years was sufficient to qualify her for the job.
On his part, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani said the House was confident that she can meet up with the challanges of her new appointment .
Rt Hon. Ibani urged her to continue the good works of her late husband considering the legacy left behind by the former Attorney-General who displayed zeal and professionalism in his duties.
The newly appointed Aguma is currently the country’s Vice President of the Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA) and was before now former Commissioner for Social Welfare in the state.
Shortly after the screening, the House passed the first reading of the Rivers State College of Health and Management Technology Bill 2016.
The bill which has suffered delays due to some technicalities was proposed by Hon. Michael Chinda of Obio/Akpor Constituency III. It seeks to repeal the College law of 2001 and has 125 sections with two parts.
The leadership of the State House of Assembly addressed protesting pensioners who barricaded the gate of the complex last Wednesday.
Promising the pensioners that their message will be sent to the executive for appraisal, the speaker said, “We know that you people are our mothers and fathers and this government stands for justice. As a legislature, we will interface with the executive”.
The speaker reminded the pensioners that the state governor was doing everything to move the state forward and hence, they should be patient and always join hands to improve governance.
Last Friday, the House of Assembly Committee on Power organised a one-day summit on protecting power infrastructure in the state. The Chairman of the House Committee on Power, Hon. Blessing Pepple said the summit is to articulate the views of stakeholders and other industry players to improve the sector.
