NASS Siege: Osinbajo Fires DSS DG, Daura …Names Seiyefa Ag DSS Boss
The Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday, sacked the acting Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, with a threat to deal decisively with other security agents involved in the siege on the National Assembly.
Daura’s sack was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President, Laolu Akande.
It’s generally believed that the sack of the DG of DSS may not be unconnected with his role in the Tuesday’s siege of the National Assembly.
A statement signed and issued by Akande said all those involved in the takeover of the National Assembly will be “identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.”
The statement reads, “Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has described the unauthorized takeover of the National Assembly complex earlier today as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.
“According to him, the unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.
“By this statement, Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.”
However, Lawal Daura has been arrested and detained, after Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo sacked him as the Director-General of the Department of State Security (DSS), yesterday.
Osinbajo, had fired Daura after a meeting with him and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The two security chiefs, who arrived Aso Rock at different times, were to update the acting president on security developments including the blockade of the National Assembly by security officials.
It was learnt that Daura was arrested by a combined team of the police and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
It is understood that news of his arrest, sparked wild jubilations at the DSS headquarters.
The former DSS DG was appointed on July 2, 2015, following the resignation of Ita Ekpeyong.
Daura joined the DSS in 1982 and rose to the rank of Director.
He was the Deputy Director of Presidential Communication, Command and Control Centre at the Presidential Villa, Abuja between 2003 and 2007.
Similarly, there are indications that the Federal Government may have named the most senior Director in the Department of State Service (DSS), Matthew Seiyefa, as the Acting Director General.
Seiyefa, from Bayelsa State arrived the Presidential Villa in an official SUV at 4pm, clutching a file and was received at the entrance by the ADC to the Acting President.
The Acting DG Mattew Seiyefa, who is the most senior Director, Department of State Services (DSS), left the presidential Villa about 5pm and was escorted to a Peugeot 508 car by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, office of the Vice president, Laolu Akande.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has exonerated the Nigeria Police Force from yesterday’s blockage of the National Assembly (NASS) by security operatives.
Idris stated this after a closed door meeting with the acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday.
He said the blockage of the NASS complex was a surprise to him, adding that the police would soon issue a statement on the incident.
“Obviously, like I said, I have not got a detailed brief on that. So, when I get the brief, in fact we are going to issue a (press) release,’’ he said.
Osinbajo had yesterday sacked the Director General, Department of State Service, Lawal Daura with immediate effect, over the invasion of the premises of the National Assembly.
Osinbajo condemned the unauthorized takeover of the National Assembly complex, describing it as “a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.’’
He maintained that the “unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.’’
The acting President assured Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty would be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.
The sacked DSS boss had earlier met behind closed door with the acting president with the IGP Idris and the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, in attendance.
