A member of the Abia State Advisory Council and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Suleiman Ukandu, has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government over alleged refusal to grant PDP’s presidential aspirant, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, access to the Eagle Square, Abuja, to declare his intention to vie for the 2019 presidency.
Ukandu warned that the action of the Federal Government could undermine the nation’s growing democracy.
It would be recalled that the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) had last Tuesday, claimed that the Federal Government had ordered the police to seal off the Eagle Square ahead of Kwankwaso’s declaration to run for presidency.
But, Kwankwaso last Wednesday officially declared his presidential ambition at Chida Hotel in Abuja.
The event attracted thousands of Kwankwaso’s supporters and party members.
Reacting further to the development in a chat with newsmen, yesterday, Ukandu harped on the need for the government to provide a level playground for all aspirants, irrespective of political party as the country approaches the 2019 general election.
According to him, “Every aspirant should be given a free space to express his or her aspiration, irrespective of political party. This is Nigeria, we are all stakeholders in Nigeria property. It is not meant for any particular person. So, everybody should be allowed to access what belong as national property”.
“So, for barring Senator Kwankwaso from using Eagle Square for his presidential declaration showed that the APC-led Federal Government is not promoting democracy. It is condemnable. These things do not happen in a modernized clime”.
“Nigeria, as an emerging nation should emulate what happens in advanced democracy, so that everybody will be given a level playing ground to express his or her aspiration as far as politics is concerned,” Ukandu added.
