Group Slams Security Agencies Over Human Rights Violation
A Port Harcourt-based advocacy group, Advocacy for Peace, Good Governance and Social Justice has condemned the spate of human rights violation among law enforcement agencies in the country.
The group’s President, Mr John Clement, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt, yesterday expressed surprise that citizens’ rights were being violated with impunity.
Mr Clement expressed regrets that political office holders, who swore to protect the spirit and letters of the constitution had reneged.
He said that until there was strick adherence to the rule of law, lawlessness would become the order of the day.
The president said that there must be a deliberate plan by the powers-that-be to bring to book all those that break the law of the country.
According to him, “anyone that breaks the law of the land, whether in uniform or otherwise, is a criminal, we must see them as such”.
Mr Clement urged government at all levels to ensure that criminals were brought to book.
He noted that the problem with the country was the issue of prosecution of criminals.
He said until criminals were prosecuted people would continue to find crimes lucrative.
Mr Clement remarked that nobody was above the law.
He enjoined political office holders to do their best to ensure the rule of law.
