Aviation Security Set To Carry Arms
Aviation Security (AVSEC) Personnel of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will soon be licensed to carry arms at the airports across the country to complement other agencies in combating security threat.
In a statement from the Head, Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu made available to aviation correspondent, Tuesday, FAAN said the Minister of State for Aviation Sen. Hadi Sirika, in an AVSEC retreat, assured that discussion was at its final stage for the approval.
According to the statement, the arms bearing approval for the AVSEC will further strengthen the integrity of the airports further in view of the growing threats to the aviation industry.
“Arming AVSEC will ensure proper policing of the sector. It was part of efforts by the President Buhari led administration to give the country dividends of democracy.
“The Federal government approval for AVSEC to bear arms is a notable achievement in this administration’s efforts at improving the general safety of its citizenry and passengers passing through our airports”, it stated.
The statement further explained that rebranding of AVSEC was important in the building brand identity and creating a recognisable corporate identity for officers with the aim of making them much more professional and customer friendly to meet with the initiative of the Ease of Doing Business.
It also explained that most countries have shown keen interest in growing and expanding the aviation industry because AVSEC is seen as a pivotal tool to sustaining safety in all the airports.
It stated that the move is aimed at providing a class professionally trained AVSEC officers in addition fighting terrorism.
