RSG Sets Up Taskforce On Street Trading
As part of the measures to ensure free flow of traffic in the state, the Rivers State Government last Wednesday set up a special taskforce to rid the state capital and its environs of street trading.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Barr. Emma Okah in an interview with newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting in Port Harcourt said the decision to begin the evacuation of street traders in Port Harcourt metropolis was reached in the executive council meeting of the state presided over by the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike.
According to him, the taskforce was billed to begin operation next Thursday .
He listed Garrison Junction, Rumuokoro Junction, Artillery Junction, among others as areas to be rid of street traders.
The commissioner expressed concern over the attitude of traders despite the state government’s commitment in the building and rehabilitation of markets in the state.
The government spokesman said any trader caught on the roads would be arrested.
The commissioner used the opportunity to appeal to traders selling on the roads to vacate to avoid humiliation and harassment by the taskforce.
“ We have set up a special taskforce to evacuate street traders on the streets of Port Harcourt and its environs”, he said.
