An expert in the power sector, Engr Isaac Adekanya has called on the Federal Government to liberalise the power sector to give opportunities to people with requisite professional knowledge to make input in the power sector reforms.
Adekanya made the call while speaking with The Tide during an exclusive interview in Port Harcourt at the weekend.
Adekanya, said the allocation of operational liscences to electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), Generation Companies (GENCOs) and Transmission Companies (TRANSCOS) by the federal government was politicized.
He noted that experts in the power sector were deprived of the opportunity to participate in the process and attributed the dismal level of power supply in the country to the policy of non inclusion of experts in service delivery.
Adekanya, who is the chairman of the Port Harcourt branch of the Association of Electrical/Electronic Engineers, also faulted the federal government’s policy of concentrating generated power at a centre in Ogbomosho for distribution across the country.
He pointed out that the policy has created imbalances in power distribution across the various states, as the demands for power in the various states are not met.
“All the power generated by the federal government is stored at a centre at Ogbomosho before they are distributed across the various states based on the discretion of the federal government on power consumption in the various states. This policy is inadequate, the federal government should adopt a system of comparative advantage in thermal, hydro and solar power generation”.
Adekanya who advocated that states should be allowed to generate power, also called for competition in service delivery in the power sector as is the case in the telecommunication industry.
