Leader of the defunct Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF), Alhaji Asari- Dokubo, has canvassed stiffer penalties for illegal bunkering as a potent measure of checking the negative consequences of the menace on the natural environment.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after a meeting organised by Kalabari stakeholders in Degema, Headquarters of Degema LGA, against the dangers of illegal oil bunkering recently, Asari, said the Niger Delta was losing its natural heritage to illegal bunkering. He noted that people in the Kalabari axis of the Niger Delta, among several other communities in the region have lost their natural source of livelihood to illegal bunkering.
“I have not been involved in illegal bunkering in my entire life. It is regrettable that people can be callous to let loose untold pains on the entire populace just for them to get a few naira. Our ecosystem is dying, people have been displaced from their natural sources of livelihood, the entire rivers are polluted, we must stop kpo fire before kpo fire destroys all of us,” he stated.
He called on all stakeholders and regulatory agencies to proffer lasting solutions to the dangers of illegal bunkering, and emphasised that stiffer sanctions should be placed on the act through positive measures to avert more devastating trend.
He called on youths in the Niger Delta to desist from illegal bunkering and look for alternative measure of lifelihood to save their future from total destruction.
