Perm Sec Wants Special Training For Physically Challenged
The Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communications, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim has called for special training and recognition for persons with disabilities in the society.
Nsirim said this at the 10th anniversary celebration of Hope Dey Foundation and the foundation laying ceremony of a training centre for physically challenged persons at the weekend in Ozuoba community.
Nsirim who was the chairman of the occasion, said that persons with disabilities deserve special recognition in view of their exposure to societal problems.
The permanent secretary who was represented by the Director of Publications, Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr Valentine Ugboma said that the founder of the foundation, Mr Onyinye Amadi, who is a person with physical disabilities, had done something incredible that must be emulated by all segments of the society.
He said that the activities of the foundation had given hope to not only persons with disabilities but also to all members of the society.
Also speaking, the Director of Rehabilitation, Rivers State Ministry of Social Welfare/Rehabilitation, Mr Mina Jamabo said that the ministry is proud of Mr Onyinye Amadi, stressing that his activities have given hope to thousands of persons with disabilities across the state.
Jamabo who represented the Commissioner, Hon Damiete Herbert Miller said that the ministry would continue to identify with him.
In his welcome address, the Founder/President of the foundation, Mr Onyinye Amadi said the aim of the event was to thank God for giving hope to the hopeless in the society.
He said that the miserable conditions of persons with disabilities challenged him to initiate the foundation as a way of providing succour to them.
He later told The Tide in an interview that within the last 10 years, the foundation had trained over 30 persons with various skills, empowered over 50 women and provided wheel chairs to over 30.
High point of the event was the presentation of cash to 12 widows, 10 from Akpor Kingdom and two non-indigenes as well as the presentation of six wheel chairs to some persons with disabilities.
