LG Polls: RSIEC Releases Nomination, Campaign Guidelines

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) says chairmanship candidates for the June 16 Local Government Council elections shall make deposit of N10,000 while councillorship candidates shall pay deposit of N5,000 to the commission.
The commission which made this known in the timetable/guidelines it released last Tuesday while announcing the commencement of the 2018 local government Council election said such candidates must have been nominated by their political parties which had expressed interest to participate in the elections.
The guidelines also stated that to contest the election the least qualification is the secondary school certificate or its equivalent, adding that such candidate must be member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party.
The local government election timetable signed by the Chairman/Chief Electoral Commissioner of RSIEC, Hon Justice C.I.Uriri explained that political parties in the country shall be eligible to sponsor candidates for the elections provided that such political parties complete and submit an expression of interest form to participate in the elections on or before May 3,2018.
Uriri said candidates contesting as chairmen and councilors must be nominated by 10 registered voters in each of at least two thirds of the wards in the local government area and wards and must be a registered voter in the ward or the local government.
The Commission Chairman in the timetable also said that grants would be provided to political parties that have verifiable offices within Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas, adding that such grants shall be on a pro-rata basis in relation to the number of chairmanship and councilorship seats for which the candidates of the political parties have been successful.
To avoid conflicts during electioneering campaigns, the commission directed every political party to submit a comprehensive election campaign schedule to the commission for clearance, adding that such approved campaign schedules shall be made known to the local police authority as well as other political parties.
He stated that barricading of streets and public roads for political meetings, campaigns and rallies is prohibited.
