The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) says it will use the Voters Register and not the card reader for the conduct of the June 16 local government elections.
The Director in charge of Civic Education in the commission, Mene Hope Angbari who stated this during a stakeholders meeting at Sakpenwa, the headquarters of Tai Local Government Area, said the election will hold as stipulated by the commission.
Angbari urged the people to get their Permanent Voters’ Card ready for the election and choose who will represent them at the grass roots.
He reminded the people that it is their opportunity to elect their leaders as chairman and councilors, stressing that everybody should be involved in the process.
According to him, the commission is going round the 24 local government areas to sensitize the people on the need for them to educate their people to be part of the process.
He commended the people for coming out to listen to the commission, but they should help inform others that whoever becomes their leader depends on them.
The Tide gathered that Political parties primaries commence on April 16,2018 and all the parties are expected to submit the names of their candidates to the RSIEC on or before April 18, 2018, while publication of notice of date and time and names of candidates and party is on Monday May 4, 2018.
Responding, the traditional ruler of the area, Samuel Eneme called on the electorate and politicians to make the election violence-free.
