Sixty-seven political parties in Rivers State yesterday supported plans by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to conduct elections into local government councils by June this year.
This is as State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bro Felix Obuah says contrary to views spread by the opposition, no court proceedings is against RSIEC’s planned local polls this year.
The Rivers State PDP Chairman opined that RSIEC was carrying out its statutory function, and that the litigation in court did not in any way affect the activities of the state electoral umpire.
In the words of Obuah: “The last tenure of the former chairman will end by May and it does not in anyway affect the elections”.
On his part, State Chairman of Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC), Samuel Ihunwor affirmed that all the political parties were in agreement over the planned polls.
Ihunwor said the State was overdue to have a properly elected council running the local government areas, stressing that many of the political parties have been yearning for the elections.
“We as stakeholders, are in agreement as the voice of the political parties”, he said.
The Rivers State IPAC chairman dismissed the view that the former chairman was removed by the government, but by the court.
He therefore advised the electorate to come out enmasse during the planned elections and chose those who will govern them at the grassroot.
