Lecturer Advocates Introduction Of B’ball In Schools
A lecturer in the University of Port Harcourt department of human scientist and girl education Ezomoh Olumide has advocated the introduction of basketball at the primary and secondary school level.
Olumide said that, if basketball is introduced at the grassroots young ones will love playing the game.
He said this, last Wednesday in an exclusive interview with The Tidesports at the University of Port Harcourt choba during his lecture on the sport at the Uniport basketball court
He explained that, he is not a coach rather, a teacher, saying that in teaching, he passes the knowledge to those that have the skill, while a coach is the one to develop and build them up on game.
“The university has a coach for basketball but he is handling a class, where he teaches them how to handle and how to throw the ball” olumide said.
According to him, most of the students did not get access to the ball, but as he is handling them, this period, a lot of them picked interest in the game.
“If only they have gotten the knowledge from primary and secondary school, they would have done better than this in the university”, he stated.
He noted that, for the few months that he has been with them, most of the students have the fundamental skill of the sport and some did not, because they have not touched the ball at the primary and secondary school level adding that a lot of them are happy, playing the game.
The lecturer further said that, many athletes are see today developed their interest in the sport from the grassroots
“The “catch them young programme begins from the grassroots, that is the bedrock of any sports, being with them for this few months I have seen the ones that are ready to develop more skills on the game”, Olumide said.
He pointed out that many of the professional we see today started their sporting career from the grassroots in their early aged.
“I think that grassroots is the best option for any sports development” he explained.
Also speaking, Blessing Onwukwe a student of the university, shortly after the training session said that, she developed interest in basketball in November 2017 when the sport was introduced as a course at the university.
She noted that her greatest challenge is that the ball was not available when she needed it.
“I love the game since it was introduced to as a course but the ball and kit are not always there to train with”, Onwukwe said.
