I’ll Fulfill All My Promises -Wike
Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike has assured that he will meet all the promises he made to women in the state.
The Governor stated this yesterday at the event marking the 2018 International Women’s Day celebration held at Alfred Diete- Spiff Civic Center, Port Harcourt.
Wike who was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Kenneth Kobani, said all the women need to do is to continue to work hard and be supportive to his administration.
The Governor commended Rivers women for the strong support they have been giving to his administration, stressing that his administration could not have achieved the much it recorded without the strong support from women.
“I will continue to give women appointments and all their dues.
“ All you need to do is for you to meet necessary criteria, be educated, work hard and leave the rest for me”, he said.
He said that he has directed the state Ministry of Women Affairs to ensure smooth take off of the N500million Economic Empowerment promised Rivers women.
He disclosed his government as women-friendly and lauded his wife for her understanding and support.
The Governor’s wife, Justice Eberechi Suzette Nyesom-Wike said the event was to acknowledge all that women did and all they need to do.
The Governor’s wife who delivered the key note address, charged parents to always give equal opportunities to girl child as being given to male child to enable the girl child strive particularly in educational opportunities.
She regretted that even in this present period, most parents in our society give more opportunities to acquire education to male child.
She also condemned the tradition that discriminates against women during sharing of father’s property, saying it contravenes Nigerian Constitution.
“ Nobody should stop you or your daughter not to inherit from her father. It’s against the constitution
“ Don’t let anybody tell you anything different’, she maintained.
Stressing the need for women to acquire education and Information Technology, the Governor’ s wife urged women to guide against early marriage and early pregnancy saying such hinders their progress in life.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Barr Ukel Oyagiri commended the Rivers State Governor for uplifting women in the state through his programme and assured him of sustained support.
She said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Leave No Woman Behind: Press for Progress” is unique for the season as it is an awakening call for the period.
“ It is a call to awaken women from their slumber to take action to accelerate gender parity in our society, The theme will also focus on what needs to be done as the struggle for women’s freedom continues”
