A tourism operator,Mr Anago Osho, has advised the Federal Government to exploit the health and economic benefits of water hyacinth, to create opportunities for Nigerians.
Osho gave the advice yesterday in an interview with newsmen in Badagry, Lagos State.
He said the plant could serve as a form of medicine and ointment to treat skin diseases.
“Water hyacinth is usually seen as waste but it is a blessing in disguise but a lot of people do not know this.
“The hyacinth naturally absorbs pollutants, including lead, mercury and some organic compounds believed to be carcinogenic. It is also being used to cultivate waste water treatment.
“In some parts of the world like China and Taiwan, the plant is used as a carotene-rich table vegetable and sometimes, it is cooked and the green parts are eaten.
“It is also medicinal as it can be used in treating skin diseases on horses so it can be useful for those who use horses for various activities.
“These are some of the things that the government should try and exploit as it would help in solving some certain problems,” he said.
Osho, who is also President, West African Tour Guides Association, noted that the plant could help in improving the economy of the country.
“When properly dried, it can be used in making furniture, handbags, ropes and papers.
“With that, it would reduce the habitual use of trees for such purposes thereby, improving the eco-system in the country.
“If properly exploited, it would help to improve the economy of the country, and serve as another means of generating revenue for the government,” he advised.
