Cleric Warns Against Electoral Violence
A pastor residing in Port Harcourt. Mr. Toate Dornu says electoral violence results, when candidates of political parties fight for power and want to get there by all means.
Dornu who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend explained that forcing one’s way on the people was improper because it gives rooms to fear of the unknown.
He told the society that when politics is viewed as a de-or-die affair, blood shedding becomes the order of the day.
According to him, politics should not be seen as a do-or-die affair rather it should be seen as an opportunity to protect lives and property of the citizens.
He also said that to stop political violence, we should respect the right of others and noted that there should be a law that guides the conduct of the citizens during elections.
He urged government to ensure that defaulters are punished.
“We should see ourselves as an instrument in the hand of God for the betterment of the people”, Dornu said.
He also warned that politics of do-or-die witch hunting, hatred, ritualism and blood shedding should be avoided.
