Group Makes Case For People With Disabilities

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, (JONAPWD) has canvassed for the establishment of special economic policies to address the challenges of persons living with disabilities.
Chairman of the Association, Prince David Gbarato, made the assertion while speaking with The Tide in an interview in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
Gbarato, said the absence of such sustainable development framework for people with special needs had led to avoidable cases of poverty among the victims. Describing the situation as unfortunate and worrisome, the association’s chairman called on the Rivers State Government to give priority attention to the development needs of persons living with disabilities to accord them a sense of belonging in the scheme of things.
The association called for “the rehabilitation of the special school for the handicapped children along Creek Road in Port Harcourt and the establishment of a special Board or Commission that would oversee the formation and implementation of welfare packages for persons living with disabilities”.
The group also solicited media partnership in sustainable advocacy campaign, empowerment and educational programmes for persons with disabilities.
