Passerby Discovers Dead Baby In Refuse Dump
A passerby has discovered a baby of about 7-months old who was dumped at Umuasukpu river bank in Imeh Community of Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.
A source who spoke with The Tide on condition of anonymity at the weekend disclosed that the corpse of the baby was found at the river bank at about 5:46am last Friday by a woman who went to dispose refuse and described the situation as pathetic.
He attributed the ugly incident to the harsh economic condition of the country as well as the issue of giving birth outside wedlock.
Some residents who spoke with The Tide condemned the mother whom they described as, conscienceless and blamed unmarried ladies for not using family planning pills.
One Mrs Amamuche Obilor, a trader who resides along the stream road averred that she saw a shabby looking young girl who was carrying a polythene bag as she headed to the stream at about 1:19am that same day. According to her, “I flashed my torch light at her but she continued heading to the stream without hesitation”.
At about 5:30am in the morning, I saw people heading to the stream in groups, when I enquired what was happening, I learnt that a 7-month old baby was found lying lifeless at the river bank and I then recalled the shabby looking girl who passed by earlier carrying a polythene bag”, she narrated.
In her contribution, Miss Conference Morrison blamed parents for poor child upbringing and added that girls of about 14-16 years old develop body odour and contact various sexually transmitted diseases as well suffered from Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) as a result of having canal knowledge at an early age. In her words, she said “Teenagers roam the streets very late at night, sleep outside their homes and return the following day because their parents do not reprimand them”.
She called on the government to prosecute parents in ?????? Child Rights Law of Rivers State.
Mr Ozziddi in his own opinion bemoaned the fact that there were brothels at Igbo Etche. According to him “what do you expect when there are so many brothels at Igbo Etche? Every nook and cranny of Igbo Etche is a home for harlotry, how then should there not be cases of unwanted pregnancy, abortion, dumping of premature babies and crime””.
He warned teenagers and youths to be shun youthful lusts but advised them to engage in meaningful ventures.
