NPFL: Rivers United On The Brink
Rivers United FC, the Pride of Rivers have edged themselves to the precipice after another round of disappointing performance and result in the Nigeria Professional Football League.
On Monday, United hosted fellow strugglers, Katsina United in a Week 33 schedule at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium tagged relegation survival battle. It was a match Rivers United needed to win to have a realistic chance of surviving the looming relegation threat.
But out of the three points on offer, Katsina United forced their hosts to share points, scoring only one point out of the maximum at stake.
With the result, Rivers United remain rooted at the wrong side of the league table, 18th on the log with 42 points from 33 points.
On match day, things were going on well after United scored their solitary goal, courtesy of a first half strike by Kanoute late in the first half.
However, less than 30 seconds to go after regulation and added time, keeper Sunday Rotimi’s usual time wasting antics went awry as the visitors pounced on his restart to carve Rivers defence open and grabbed the equalizer.
The homers could not believe their fate as the referee sounded the final whistle as soon as they passed the ball.
