The Dynamic Women Association (DWA), a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), has offered free healthcare services to pregnant women in Ogwashi-Ukwu and its environs in Aniocha South council area of Delta State.
The President of DWA, Miss Favour Okolo-Obi, disclosed this to newsmen in Ogwashi-Ukwu, last Sunday.
Okolo-Obi said that the free maternity service carried out at the association’s clinic in Ogwashi-Ukwu, was part of its humanitarian services, revealing that the group was committed to providing access to maternal health care and reducing the rate of maternal mortality in the area.
The president said the clinic commenced operations on February 14 with free medical services to the people of the community.
“Over the years, we have been involved in lots of women empowerment initiatives, provision of access to justice, mother and child health care services and gender equality programmes.
“So, in February, we decided to start off a clinic to provide free maternity services to women, especially those who have financial challenges, to realise their dream of having healthy children.
“With our team of medical doctors and nurses, we have so far helped in successfully delivering some women in our clinic free of charge,” she said.
Okolo-Obi further said that the association had taken its services to Aboh, Olodu and Olor, as well as the Delta Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Ukwu, where it provided free medical check-up, drugs and treatment to children and adults.
One of the beneficiaries and an expectant mother, Mrs Esther Maduka, told newsmen that the free services by the association had been of tremendous help to most women in the area.
Maduka said the gesture had enabled many pregnant women in the communities access to free maternity care, drugs and regular check-up which were necessary for safe delivery.
“I was four months pregnant when I started attending antenatal clinic and the people have been very nice to us.
“We know that with the current economic situation, not everybody can afford to pay for hospital services, but thank God, Dynamic Women Association has come to our rescue,” she said.
