NBA Confab Begins, Soon
This year’s 57th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), will impact positively on the legal professionals especially the new lawyers that were recently called to Bar. The AGM, which is expected to begin from 18th August and end on the 24th of the same month, will be holding at Eko Hotel, Lagos.
The 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NBA has the theme “African Business Penetrating through Institution building”. The purpose of this conference according to the organisers is to train and educate the lawyers on law matters.
During the one week, there will be workshop, seminars, as well as issuance of certificates among others to the participants.
It is expected that all lawyers across the 36 states including Abuja will be in attendance during the general meeting to enable them get more acquainted with law matters as well as in other aspects of life, it will also help them to get to meet and interact with their fellow legal colleagues and share idea’s together.
Speaking with The Tide, some members of Port Harcourt branch of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Friday, in Port Harcourt, Barr. A.C. Owhor of Celestine Omehia & Associate, Advocate & Legal Consultants Port Harcourt, said that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NBA would be splendid, because of the various activities that would be taking place during the one week event like the workshop and seminars, among others, and help to enhance the capacity of the members.
Barr. Owhor stated that the AGM for this year annual conference was more expensive higher than the previous years and added that such had contributed immensely and noted that many lawyers might not be participate.
According to him, those who are between one and five years old in Bar are expected to pay N20,000, 6-10 years are to pay N30,000 and the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Attorneys-General, Benchers are to pay N200,000.
Also speaking, Barr. Ken Obayi the head of Divitiae Chambers Port Harcourt told The Tide that the conference was expected to bring the lawyers all over the country including journalists together, to enable them take a look at critical national issues as well as provide practitioners with legal materials.
“The Annual General Meeting will be a successful one, the activities scheduled are awresome, the gifts are also wonderful, the only things that will affect this 2017 AGM is the high cost, the cost for the conference is much and not every lawyers will be able to come up with it, and are it will be affected by the quota system which is in the Nigeria Bar Association policy, the year of call which depends on the number of lawyers who are to attend the AGM”.
“Am above 10 years and is expected of me to pay N60,000 and I will have to pay for my accommodation and feeding, is too much for me”, he stated.
