‘Lack Of Technical Manpower, Bane Of Sports Dev’
The Director of Rivers State Sports Council, Joshua J. Kio (Permanent Secretary), has said that lack of adequate technical manpower is the bane of sports development in Nigeria.
He stated that if governments do not make conscious effort to train new crop of technical manpower, sports in the country may sink.
Kio made the assertion in an exclusive interview with Tidesports recently in Port Harcourt, saying that capacity building is the key to sports development.
According to him, some sports associations in the country do not have competent coaches to train attletes.
“We need to train new crop of technical manpower in the sports industry. I mean capacity building, if we do not do that sports in this country is going to sink”, Kio said.
He explained that the absence of competitions is also one of the reasons why sports is going down, because training without competition will make athletes rusty, besides athletes would not know their level of improvement.
“Apart from the fact that we lack competent technical manpower in our sports sector another major problem is absence of regular competitions and tournaments.
Competitions will make athletes improve as they will use it to correct their mistakes, also improve on the areas of their weaknesses”, he stated.
