The Director, Public Health, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr Nnana Onyekwere has called for proper diagnosis and treatment of Typhoid infections to guide against intestinal  disorders.
The call became imperative following the rampant unguided assumption of the typhoid infections contraction by patients and drug dispensers.
Speaking in a chat with The Tide in his office in Port Harcourt, recently, Onyekwere noted with dismay the act of drug dispensers giving typhoid treatment alongside malaria, describing it as an act of mistreatment and making quick gains.
“Giving typhoid treatment  alongside malaria is a mistreatment and the Nigerian drug dispensers quick way of making money. Ordinarily, no treatment should be done without proper diagnosis and medical prescription but that is not the case here’, he said. Onyekwere explained that typhoid usually passes on with faeces adding that contracting it would have been through an infected food, water or hand.
According to him “typhoid is a serious illness that causes perforations in the intestine and if not detected early could lead to emergency surgery but we play levity to it by attributing every common signs and symptoms to it just for personal gains and detriment tool”.
Onyekwere stressed the need for regular handwashing, consumption of clean food and water as well as medical test before treatment of any kind saying “above all, we must stop self-medication in order not to endanger our health.
