The current police administration in Rivers State has started collaborating with the Ministry of Social Welfare to put a stop to child hawking during school hour.
The Director, Social Welfare in the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Rivers State, Mr Immabo Fubara, made the statement last week in Port Harcourt in a workshop facilitated by Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) and the Medical Women Association (MWAN) Rivers State.
Fubara said although it may not be possible to automatically stop child hawking due to the economic situation the country is faced with, the collaborative effort of the police and the ministry is sure to produce a positive result in the next two weeks. Stating the position of the law in this regard, the legal laison officer in the ministry of social welfare and rehabilitation, Mrs Membre Asimea, said the law is clear, whether school hour or not, the law is against child hawking.
It will be recalled that the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria forbids the use of under-aged children for hawking.
