Police Arrest Man, Wife For Killing Armed Robbery Suspect
Officials of Igwuruta Police Division, Rivers State, have arrested a 50-year-old man and his wife for allegedly killing a member of armed robbery gang that attacked them at their residence in Igwuruta at the weekend.
A source said the man, name withheld, was said to have been attacked by a group of robbers at his residence at Lebac Hotel along farm road axis in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
According to the source, the suspect popularly called chief in the neighbourhood, shot and killed one of the armed robbers who attacked him at about 1.00am on Thursday night. The source further said that the chief reported the matter to Igwuruta Police Division who later mobilised to the scene of the incident and took away the corpse of the dead armed robber.
It was also gathered that the police after removing the dead corpse came back and arrested all the family members of the chief but later released the children and refused to grant bail to the chief and his wife.
A resident of the area who just described himself as Nwubi, said the man and his wife were later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Rumukpokwu for further investigation.
According to Mr Nwubi, the man and his wife have been in police detention for over six days and added that the crime he committed was that he shot armed robbers who came to kill him.
He said cases of armed robbery incidents have been on the rampage in the area that police are not doing anything meaningful to protect residents within the area.
He called on the police to release the man and his wife unconditionally and added that residents of the area would lead a protest march to the commissioner of police if their neighbour and wife are not released.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.
