A renowned educationist in Rivers State and Zonal Director of Ministry of Education, Oyigbo Local Government Area, Dr Christiana Sibor, has advocated the use of counsellors in the nation’s educational institutions to help in the upbringing of children.
Dr Sibor made the all recently at Oyigbo while interacting with The Tide on the standard of education currently in Nigeria.
According to her, every child has a right in the society and the Child’s Right Law as established in 1989 enables them to properly enjoy some rights and privileges and also ensure their protection against all forms of abuse.
She said when schools engage the  services of counsellors, it would help in the development and better upbringing of children because as experts they will counsel and offer their advice when children are faced with problems that are inimical to their growth.
Sibor made it clear that the upbringing of a child is not the duties of their parents .. and school authorities alone, but a collective responsibility of all in the society.
She added that in a Christian home, the church is also expected to play key roles in the development of the child, especially in morals and spiritual activities and advised children not to be offended any time they are being corrected as it is for their own good.
The educationist urged parents not to maltreat their children, pointing out that, such actions always affect children in future.
